Biographical Information


Robert E. Baird

Died October 20th, 1914, interred at Beauvoir in Biloxi, Mississippi.


David Dockery Jr.

Born on July 1st, 1839.  Brother to George Sr and Henry Dockery.  He married Eliza Shelfer (niece of James Shelfer) on December 22nd, 1866, and they had 9 children.  He died on August 8th, 1886.  He is interred in South Sandy Cemetery in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.


George W. Dockery Sr.

Born on August 14th, 1830 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.  He is the brother of David, Robert, and Henry Dockery.  He entered the service as a private on April 11th, 1862 at Tuscaloosa and served until discharge at Fort Blakely on May 26th, 1865.  On September 21st, 1866 he married Nancy Sumner, and they had 6 children.  He died on June 9th, 1911 and is interred in South Sandy Cemetery in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.


George Washington Dockery, Jr.

Born ca. 1842 and died during the war.


Henry C. Dockery

Born ca. 1839.  Married Amanda Martin.


James P. Dockery

Born in 1850.  Brother to William L., George Jr., and John Kemp Dockery.


John Kemp Dockery

Born ca. 1836.  Brother to  William L., George Jr., and James Dockery.  In May of 1855 he married Sarah McGill.  He died at Chickamauga in 1863.


Robert Harthur Dockery

Born ca. 1853 in Alabama.  Brother to George Sr. and David Dockery.  He was married on January 17th, 1860 to Sarah Sumner.


William L. Dockery

Born in July 1834 in Alabama.  Brother to James P., William L., and George Jr. Dockery.  He was married on April 19th, 1857 to Mary Caroline Wright at the residence of Edward Rowe, and they had 10 children.  He died June 15th, 1906 in Hale County, Alabama.


Phillip Jackson Ellis

Phillip Jackson Ellis enlisted as a private in (old) Co. H, 5th regiment Alabama Infantry on April 22, 1861 for a period of one year. He reenlisted with other members of the 5th Infantry regiment, said to be the first regiment that reenlisted for the duration of the war and became Fowler's-Phelan's artillery battery  on Dec. 28, 1861.

Mr. Ellis served for the duration of the war and surrendered with his company at the end of the war near Meridian, Mississippi.  He was married to Melcenia Loretta Miller. (She was called Sennie by the family.)

Phillip Jackson Ellis moved to Texas in 1888 with the Millers and other Ellis family members. He lived in Dawson, Texas until his death in 1910. He is buried at Dawson Cemetery (as is his wife) and has a CSA marker on his grave.

Married Elizabeth J. Dockery, sister of William L., John K, and George Jr. Dockery.


Allen Jones Mozingo

Allen Jones Mozingo was the oldest son of Absolom Pierce Mozingo.  He was born on July 19th, 1828, around the time the family moved to Bibb County, Alabama from North Carolina.  He and his two brothers, Jackson and William, joined Captain Fowler's Field Artillery Battery while it was recruiting in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in the spring of 1862.  He served throughout the war and surrendered with the battery near Meridian, Mississippi on May 5th, 1865.  After the war, he and his wife raised the two small sons of his brother, William, and moved to Bowie County, Texas in the 1880's.  He died on May 30th, 1894.

 

 


Jackson Mozingo

Jackson Mozingo built a cabin outside of Winfield, Alabama before the war.  He joined Fowler's Battery on February 28th, 1862 with his brothers Allen and William and served throughout the war.  He returned to his cabin and moved it up a hill, where it still stands today.  Click here to see actual muster documents of Jackson Mozingo.

 

 

 

 

 

 


William Blocker Mozingo

William Mozingo joined Fowler's Battery on February 28th, 1862 with his brothers Allen and Jackson.  On June 3rd, 1864 he was captured outside of Marietta, Georgia.  He was sent to a POW camp in Brooklyn, New York, where he died.


Edward David (possibly Dudley) Rowe

Born November 30th, 1838 in South Sandy, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.  He was first married to Susan Everilla Martin on October 21st, 1856, and they had 11 children.  According to Hetta Beatrice Furr, granddaughter of E.D. Rowe, Edward was working as an overseer of a sugar plantation in Louisiana when the war broke out.  He then brought his wife, Susan, and three boys back to Tuscaloosa and joined the army.  After the war, he moved to Tallahatchie County, Mississippi and became a minister.  On December 18th, 1883, he married Mollie Goodnight, and they had 4 children.  He represented the county in the State Legislature and was a member of the Constitutional Convention of 1890.  He died November 29th, 1915 in Enid, Mississippi.  He is interred at Bethel Methodist Church in Teasdale, Mississippi.


George Washington Rowe

Born February 4th, 1834 in either Georgia or North Carolina.  He was brother to Edward D. Rowe and half brother to James Shelfer, both battery members.  He enlisted into Rodes' unit in Tuscaloosa on April 23rd, 1861, and re-enlisted in the Artillery for war on December 28th, 1861 at Davis Ford, Virginia.  He was discharged on May 10th, 1864.  On December 24th, 1865 he married Martha Jane Sumners, and they had one daughter.  G.W. Rowe was on the Liberty Church membership roles from 1870-1879, and was a charter member of the Hopwell Baptist Church.  He died on July 28th, 1902 in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

G.W. and Edward's brother, Eli Rowe, joined Company I, 20th Alabama Infantry and was missing and presumed dead after the battle of Champion's Hill (aka Battle of Baker's Creek) Mississippi on May 16th, 1863.


James Winn Savage

Born July 23rd, 1844 in Northport, Alabama.  He entered service as a private in Fowler's Battery in November, 1861.  He was seriously wounded at Lovejoy Station, Georgia on September 3rd, 1864.  After spending 3-4 weeks in the hospital in Eufaula, Alabama, he returned to his command and stayed in Fowler's Battery for the duration of the war.  He was paroled in Meridian, Mississippi on May 9th, 1865.  Mr. Savage died in 1912.  Jon Ingram, of the modern Fowler's Battery, is a descendant of Mr. Savage.

James Seneca Shelfer, Jr.

Born ca. 1825 in Jones or Onslow County, North Carolina, and moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama with his mother after her marriage to James Rowe.  Enlisted on February 1st, 1863 in Mobile, Alabama.  He was married to Nancy S. Tucker.  Last paid on October 31st, 1868.  Mr. Shelfer died ca. 1870.


James Jasper Uptain

Born April 25th, 1843 in Coal Hill, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.  Enlisted March 29th, 1862 in Tuscaloosa.  James Jasper Uptain reportedly died  on March 20, 1894, in Mulberry, Johnson County, Arkansas, in this manner:  James' son, William Pinkney Uptain, told his son, Harold Uptain, that a neighbor's wife was having a troubled labor in the middle of the night.  They asked James, who was an expert horseman and who was the only neighbor with horses, to ride for the doctor.  While crossing the Mulberry River, he lost control of his mount, fell in, and, because of the weight of a buffalo skin robe he was wearing, he was taken under and drowned.  The doctor never arrived, but the neighbor's wife delivered a healthy baby.  He is interred at Sherman Cemetery, Low Gap, Johnson County Arkansas. 


John A. Uptain

Born June 25th, 1841 in DeKalb County, Alabama.  Died August 10th, 1913 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.  He is interred at Fairview Cemetery in Walker County, Alabama.
